LEDA

LEDA IS INSPIRED BY ISAMU NOGUCHI’S WORK OF THE SAME NAME, AN ANNULAR ALABASTER SCULPTURE MADE IN 1942.

IT WAS ONE OF THE FIRST PIECES HE CREATED WHILE BACK HOME IN GREENWICH VILLAGE, AFTER HIS INTERNMENT IN ARIZONA.

NOGUCHI SOUGHT SOLACE IN SCULPTURE, EXPLORING NEW MATERIALS AND METHODS. HIS IDEAS AND FEELINGS ARE QUIETLY REFLECTED IN HIS WORKS OF THAT TIME. LEDA TRANSLATES TO JOY AND HAPPINESS, BUT IT IS ALSO THE NAME OF A TRAGIC CHARACTER IN GREEK MYTHOLOGY.

WITH LEDA, WE WANTED TO EMULATE THE ORGANIC OUTLINES USED IN NOGUCHI'S SCULPTURES. EACH GLASS RING IS UNIQUE IN FORM, DUE TO ITS HAND-FIRED ORIGIN. THE RESULTING SHAPES ARE AN ARRANGEMENT OF CURVES AND ANGLES, ECHOING THE CYCLE OF NATURE ITSELF.

A PORTION OF THE PROCEEDS FROM LEDA WILL GO TO THE IMMIGRANT HISTORY INITIATIVE, WHICH FOCUSES ON ASIAN AMERICAN STORIES OF IMMIGRANT DIASPORA.
